If you are beginner, please come in comfortable loose clothing (white t-shirt and long white exercise pants), bring a towel and a water bottle (towels & water both available: $2 each). All training is in bare feet. If you are a graduated student, you are expected to train in full white uniform with your belt. If you are a student visiting from another Capoeira academy, please wear your own uniform.

All Classes

Classes are offered for all levels, abilities and ages. There are range of different offers and memberships deals – please call by our academy to discuss the best option for you! These tips have been formulated to get the best results, no matter what level of experience. If you are serious about your classes, these steps will ensure your improvement:

1. Basic Steps
It is vital that you practice your basic steps to the extent that you no longer use your mind to think about what you are doing. Once your body remembers the basic steps (as opposed to your mind), you will improve and you can develop with ease.

2. Music
Having music that you can practice or listen to is another important step to improving. Just listening to music will help you to understand the beats to the music. You'll also be able to use the music to practice your basic steps.

3. 1 on 1
Private lessons are very useful. Your teacher can help correct any bad habits, which will result in you enjoying and benefiting even more from your weekly classes. Get in touch with us to discuss your needs and what you would like to achieve.

4. Practice Makes Perfect
The above tips are essential and recommended for best results. Listening carefully in class when your instructor is explaining a step or sequence also helps. Use these tips, starting with number 1 through to number 4 and you will be able to achieve satisfying and surprising results, but ultimately it's up to you!

Health and Risks

Persons must not train if they are suffering from the flu or other viral infection that may be passed on to other persons. Please must advise the Instructor if suffering from any injury or medical condition, either permanent or temporary, which may be adversely affected by certain types of training. Some examples of this may include blood pressure problems and cardiac disorders, neck and back injuries, diabetes and asthma. Persons must not attend training under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. Smoking is not allowed in the Training Area or in front of the Academy. Persons with a cut or bleeding injury must cease training immediately and receive appropriate first aid. Rejoining the training session will not be allowed until the instructor has deemed that is safe to do so. Capoeira is a contact martial art, meaning it involves physical contact with one or more other practitioners in ways designed to simulate as closely as possible the self-defence options available to a practitioner when confronted with physical aggression and/or threatening behavior. As in any other physically demanding recreational activity, there is always a risk of injury. Any person participating in a class conducted by Capoeira Academy does so with the full understanding that whilst it is the policy of Capoeira Academy to minimise this risk, the nature of contact physical activity prevents its total elimination. Persons participating in a class conducted by Capoeira Academy do so of their own violation and at their own risk. Please ensure that you let your instructor know if you have any injuries or medical issues. As a member it is essential that you complete a medical form for insurance reasons. If you have a serious injury or display signs of an injury, the instructor has a right to request a medical certificate stating that you are fit for training.

Training Area Etiquette

  1. The word ' Salvé ' is to be said at the beginning and completion of all classes. If a student arrives late or leaves early, ' Salvé ' must be said to the class upon the student's exit or entrance. If a student leaves the room momentarily, s/he must also say ' Salvé ' before s/he leaves the room and upon his/her entrance again. This is a sign of greeting and respect for the teacher, the students and for Capoeira.
  2. "Salvé": Stand with your feet together, place your right hand over the heart and say "Salvé" as you lift your hand way from the heart.
  3. Shoes must be taken off upon entering the training area.
  4. Persons must be punctual and must arrive fifteen minutes earlier than the specified training starting time, so that they are ready to train when class commences. If arriving late, a person must wait at the side of the Training Area until the Instructor indicates that a person may join the class.
  5. Persons must not chew gum whilst training.
  6. Food and/or drink (including water) must not be consumed whilst on the training area.
  7. Mobile phones must be turned off during training. Mobile phones inadvertently left on during training may not be answered. Any person who is "on-call" for work may seek approval from the instructor prior to the commencement of class to leave his or her mobile phone on.
  8. Whilst the class is relaxed and friendly, please avoid unnecessary "chitchat" , especially when instructions are being given, out of respect for other participants and your instructor. There is plenty time for chatting before and after class.
  9. The teacher in charge requires notification before the commencement of class if anyone needs to leave early.
  10. If during the course of a class, instructions are not understood, feel free to clarify with your instructor.
  11. Only the teacher in charge will request the assistance of particular students when conducting the class.
  12. Once a Capoeirista (Capoeira player) receives a Capoeira name, they must be called this name during any Capoeira encounter, eg class, performance, batizado etc.

Women Only Classes

Women only classes are taught by female instructors and are a strict female only environment.
In order to provide a safe environment and in respect for cultural or religious reasons, men and boys are not able to come to the academy during this time- neither for training or watching.

Women only workshops can also be provided on special request. Please contact Capoeira Academy to discuss your needs with a female instructor.
